Encounter Youth Conference

We are about one month away from one of the biggest events of the year in our student ministry at Eastridge: Encounter Youth Conference. It is going to take place September 25-26. I am so excited to have Wes Dunn as our guest speaker this year! It will be an incredible weekend!
This year we are partnering with my good friend, Pastor Andy Jones and Live
Youth Ministries from Fairwood Church. I am pumped to work together with good friends in ministry. Together we can do more! I would encourage all of our students to get signed up and registered for this event! It is going to be awesome!

Unbound (part 3)

Unbound from Anger and Offense

If there are common areas as Christians that we fall into captivity in it probably includes anger and offense. Let's face it: we all find ourselves at times becoming angry with people, circumstances or trials that we face in life. None of us get an exemption from frustration. The key is what we do with it.

We have been looking at what it is to live as people who are Unbound. In Luke 4, we see Jesus addressing a crowd and says the following:
14 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. 16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18 “ The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”

20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Jesus came to set us free from areas of captivity in our lives. He wants His people to live UNBOUND from anything that could hinder or limit them. This includes areas of Anger and Offense in our lives.

Anger and offense go hand in hand. And neither bring about a good result in our lives. The Bible deals a lot with how we handle anger and not allowing offenses to remain in our lives. Take a look at these verses.

Ephesians 4:26-27

26 “In your anger do not sin”a: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.

James 1:19-20

19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

Proverbs 18:19

19 An offended brother is more unyielding than a fortified city,

and disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel.
We often are guilty of packing away anger and offenses into our lives. And the very thing that we think we control, soon begins to control us. Anger and offense controls our outlook on life, our joy and even our health. Even more important is the fact that if we do not deal with anger in our lives, it leaves a door open for the enemy to come and take some territory (see Eph. 4:26-27).

As Paul writes Ephesians 4, he is addressing UNITY within the church. People cannot walk together in unity if they are angry and offended with one another. If left unresolved, Anger and Offense will:

Destroy Unity

Destroy Joy

Destroy Vision

Destroy Potential

Here is something that can help each of us: remember what true love looks like. Each of us as believers are called to love God and love people. 1 Corinthians 13 gives us a great picture of what true love looks like in the life of a believe. Listen to what 1 Corinthians 13:15 says, "[love] is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs."

When you survey your life, do you find that you are easily angered? Do you find yourself keeping a checklist of things that people have done to that you hold on to - and even remind them of? Lets be people who are Unbound from Anger and Offense.

Jamaica Missions Journal #2

Today was day two in the building process and the childrens ministry. Great things are happening. On the first day of VBS there were 80 children from the community who showed up. Today there were over 120 children! And in the first two days there have been about 50 children who have made decisions for Christ!
Our building teams have been busy. They have repainted many of the rooms inside the school, begun to put the trusses up on the eating facility, as well as pouring supporting beams on the kitchen facility. Yesterday we had the blessing of an unexpected rain storm which brought some relief from the heat. Today there was no such luck - it was very hot! Yet even through the heat and the challenges, it is so awesome to see a team of people who are motivated by the love of Christ to reach out and be a blessing to others!
Everyday there has been something special and memorable that has taken place. There is something about being on a missions trip that causes you to appreciate and be thankful for all that God has blessed you with. We have such an amazing responsibility to go into our world with the love and hope that is found in Jesus - and share what we have been given.

Jamaica Missions Journal #1

Today was our second day in Jamaica, and our first day at our work site - Harvest Hills School, which is a Latin American Childcare School (LACC). Our teams divided up into two main groups: construction and childrens ministry. Our construction team focused on laying block, pouring columns in the new kitchen facility and also began framing the new eating area for the 130 children who attend the school and currently have no place to eat. Our childrens team held their first day of VBS (Vacation Bible School) at the church that is attached to the school. We were amazed as 80 kids showed up for the fun!
Around 11 AM as we were in the midst of our work, a massive rain shower moved in. People often say it rains a lot in Seattle...I am just glad we do not have rain like this! Everyone was soaked. I will try to add some video of the rain to our missions blog (www.eastridgemissions.com).
It has been a great experience for many of our team who have never traveled outside of the US. Watching people reach out to others, build relationship and serve is a wonderful thing to observe. Tomorrow we will continue with construction, as well as our childrens ministry VBS.

Take some time to check out our Eastridge Missions Blog - www.eastridgemissions.com. We will be giving updates throughout the week with pictures, stories and video of what is going on.

Unbound (part 2)

Unbound from Captivity

In our student ministry we have been in a series entitled "Unbound". It is based upon the passage of scripture found in Luke 4:14-21

18 “ The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

It is awesome that our God has the ability and desire to set captives free! No matter how long we have been Christians, or been on the journey of life, there are things that seek us out to take us captive. But it is God's desire that we would live the type of lives that are unbound from any area of captivity.

It can happen quickly. We are running the race strong in our faith. We are running it to win. Yet quickly there can be little things that start to weigh us down. Things we take up that we think we control...but all too often they end up controlling us. Area's that, if left undelt with, will take us captive and hinder our ability to run the race that God has called us to.

The word "captive" in Luke 4 in the original language gives us a picture of a prisoner of war who was taken from spear point to be held captive. Have you ever felt that way in life? There are things that you just cannot seem to get past? Things that seem to have a tight control of you - even though you truly love Jesus and commit your way of life to Him?

What has you held captive? Is there areas in your thoughts, attitudes, desires or patterns in your life that are holding you, more than you are holding them? It is the TRUTH that will set us free. Allow His truth of love and redemption to break the chains that hold you in captivity in your life.

Allow the chains to be broken, so that you can be Unbound from captivity.

Taking Steps Forward in Faith

I love seeing young people take steps forward in their faith. At our summer camp this year we made a big push for students to get baptized in water if they have not yet done so. I was amazed by the response. Over 20 students signed up to get baptized in water. Beginning this past weekend we started the process, and this weekend even more will be getting baptized.

Being a part of seeing young people dedicate their lives to Jesus is amazing! And I love being at a church that is a part of the Great Commission!

Get it in you

Today I was thinking and reflecting on the importance of us getting the Word of God into our hearts and minds. God's Word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), it is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105) and it teaches us how to live right lives (Psalm 119:9-11). It is vital for us to be people who are reading it, learning it and applying it's truths in our lives.

A while back I came across a great resource that you may find helpful. There is a company who's mission is to record the bible in audio for every nation and language. On their website they have a free audio bible download. As well, you can make a donation to their cause to see bibles translated into every language and spread around the world. This means if you have an iPod, computer, or any other way to play mp3's you can listen to the bible while doing whatever it is that you do.

Imagine taking a month to listen to the bible during your commute instead of listening to music or the radio. What if you were listening to the book of Romans while you were at the gym instead of the same songs you always listen to. There are a lot of students who have told me over the years that they don't like to read. I wouldn't recommend replacing reading your bible with just listening, but if you can't or won't read, at least listen. I challenge you to get the Word in you. Allow it to change you from the inside out.

Get the Word in you.

Unbound (part 1)

In our student ministry we started a new series last night entitled "Unbound". It is based upon the passage of scripture found in Luke 4:14-21

18 “ The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

I love the fact that we have a savior that said he came to heal the brokenhearted! Jesus in this passage communicates that God wants His people to live lives that are UNBOUND. Even though this is His desire, the truth is that many people live lives that are bound up. One area that many deal with: areas of brokenness.

Brokenness can come from different places: brokenness caused by others, brokenness caused by ourselves (inflicted from difference choices and decisions) and brokenness caused by disappointment. No matter what it stems from, I truly believe that Jesus came to heal the areas of brokenness in our lives, so that we are able to live WHOLE.

Why do we allow brokenness to remain in our lives when we have experienced the love and grace of God? Many are either unwilling to face the pain of that brokenness or don't have the ability to know where to start dealing with it. But we cannot fix what we are unwilling to face. Ignoring it won't help. And the truth is that even when God pours into us, if we allow areas of brokenness and fracture to remain without being mended by Jesus, what is poured into us will slowly leak out - leaving us empty and dry.

Jesus said "You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32). The Truth He communicated to us in Luke 4 is that He came to heal the brokenhearted. If there are areas of brokenness that you face - allow the healer to bring wholeness where there is brokenness.
